Set inNew York City, 1966, Nothing Special follows Mae, a disillusioned seventeen-year-old adrift in a world of dead-end expectations. Living in a crumbling apartment with her alcoholic mother and her mothers drifting boyfriend, Mae finds herself alienated from both the shallow cliques of high school and the predatory men she encounters daily.

Her world shifts when she drops out and lands a strange but thrilling jobas a typist for Andy Warhol. Warhol is creating a novel unlike any other, pieced together from hours of taped conversations with his inner circle of glittering, enigmatic personalities. Mae is tasked with transcribing these voices, each more captivating and bizarre than the last.

Through her growing friendship with fellow typist Shelley, Mae is pulled into the Factorys surreal, seductive orbit. They drift through parties, navigate desire and identity, and begin to unravel under the weight of other peoples stories. As Mae becomes entranced by the voices on the tapes, she starts to lose touch with her ownand must confront the murky line between art, exploitation, and self-erasure.
