Many Indigenous Nations like the Pueblo tribes and the Lakota view buffalo as brothers with whom they share a deep spiritual connection. They believe that showing wildlife reciprocity and respect will take you down a good road in life. Burt Awelagte’s strong Buffalo is carved from a slightly curved orange spiny oyster shell and inlaid with eyes from sky blue turquoise. Horns are from turquoise beads. The offering bundle holds a tiny little seashell, a special touch. About 2 1/4″ long, 5/8″ wide and 1 5/8″ tall. Joseph Quam was Burt’s carving teacher and mentor.
