Zuni artist Burt Awelagte was taught to carve by mentor Joseph Quam. Burt says he carefully listens to the stone and it tells him what it wants to be. A striking sodalite specimen whispers strong attributes of Bear in this approximately 4″ long, 3/4″ wide and 2 1/2″ tall direct carving between artist and mineral. Burt paid close attention to the color patterns which tell a story of strength as the bear pushes through deep snow. Meaningful eyes are from turquoise inlays. An offering bundle is loosely laced with a small seashell and turquoise beads giving some movement to the gift. About 4″ long, 3/4″ wide and 2 1/2″ tall.
