Fossils are evidence of past life forms, a tangible connection to landscapes, animals and knowledge. The Purisima Formation in California is a sandstone one that hosts well-preserved fossils of invertebrates such as mollusks, gastropods, crab fragments and barnacles that lived in a shallow marine sea during the Pliocene epoch. Daryl Shack, Sr.’s cultured opal-eyed bushytail (Wolf, Fox or Coyote) has been carved from a fossil-rich Purisima stone to a dimension of roughly 2 3/4″ long, 1/2″ wide and 1 1/4″ tall.
